This was a black tie event and definitely one which was very different to any we have been a part of. The primary goal of the 5 for Change event was that of raising social awareness among young professionals. Kristanna Loken, our global ambassador, was the MC for the night along with Guy McDonald from Good Hope FM.

The event was a great success with the 5 for Change team raising in excess of R 55 000 for all the organizations involved.

We must commend the 5 for Change team for their innovative approach to the event and a special thanks must go to the founders of 5 for Change – Adriaan Dippenaar, Dave Deetlefs & Ross Mckernan and their amazing event team.

We quickly fitted into the environment, made friends with the locals and made ourselves at home.

Our journey is to understand why children would leave the beauty and abundance of rural South Africa to live in our Cities – their reasons became clearer as we journeyed into the Villages where life stands still. There is no youth development going on in the Transkei and this generation is feeling misunderstood and disempowered. It is with huge respect and gratitude that we thank Dave Martin and Rejane Woodroffe for the incredible work they are doing with the Bulungula Incubator and the impact they are having on the children and elders of the ‘Kei’.

Amier Reed entered our lives at the MylifE Foundation at the tender age of 6 months old and both him and his sister Lakayla (1 year old) their mom Simone Reed and dad Manie Pretorius are with us in Terra Khaya. It has been incredible to watch this little boy take on every single opportunity in front of him and be our daily inspiration – he is the love of all of our lives.

Before Terra Khaya became what it is today, it was a piece of land covered with Invasive Alien Vegetation, specifically Wattle. Wattle on the property is in abundance and despite being labelled ‘Alien’ it serves to be a sustainable resource to Terra Khaya due to its continuous control and maintenace. The main uses of Wattle at Terra Khaya is for building material (houses, fences, furniture etc) and fire-wood. Our team learnt about the uses of Wattle and clearing methods and then spent the morning helping the Terra Khaya team to cut and clear wattle from an area which is due to be developed shortly. This experience was enjoyed by all and allowed both teams to learn team-work and unity. Please see our highlights below..

After a 40km drive, we arrived at the CATA Museum where one of the local youth presentedtheir museum, informed us of their History and interacted with our Team. This was followed by a walking tour through the village where we explored the environment, engaged with the community and visited a residential garden where the ‘mama’ demonstrated and explained her growing methods to us. Unfortunately our visit was cut short due to the weather. It was truly an incredible experience for all..
